Your Strategy Problem Isn't a Strategy Problem. It's a Cellular One.
Building When Your Body Is Saying Slow Down
88% of founders say excessive stress leads to bad decision-making.
But here’s what nobody connects: your gut produces 90% of your body’s serotonin. When the gut is compromised by chronic stress, poor sleep, inflammatory food, and zero recovery, so is every decision you make.
You’re not making bad calls because you lack strategy. You’re making bad calls because the organ running your mood, your clarity, and your risk tolerance is on fire.
That’s not a strategy problem. That’s a cellular one.
I found out the hard way.
Four years ago, I could barely keep the lights on in my business. The brain fog was so thick, I struggled to work even half a day.
I had to carefully plan my schedule around the small windows of energy I had, prioritizing only my most important clients. Even then, something felt off. I knew this wasn’t sustainable. I knew something wasn’t right.
Eventually, I made the call I didn’t want to make.
I stopped taking on clients.
That was the day I drew a line and declared my health as my number one priority. Before my business. Before anything else.
At the time, I didn’t have the language for what was happening.
Now I do.
What the science actually shows
Your gut and brain are in constant communication through the vagus nerve. Most of the signal traffic moves upward. From gut to brain. Not the other way around.
200 million neurons live in your gut. That’s more than your spinal cord. Researchers call it the “second brain” and they’re not being poetic. Your gut is literally making decisions before your prefrontal cortex gets the memo.
When that system is compromised. Inflamed, depleted, running on cortisol and coffee. Your leadership degrades in three specific ways. Not metaphorically. Measurably.
This is happening to every high performer you know
A 2025 survey found that 73% of founders experience “shadow burnout.”
Meeting their targets while depleted for three months or longer. The results still look good. The body doesn’t.
55% report insomnia.
48% report physical health decline.
57% exercise less than they did a year ago.
42% eat worse.
And 88% agree the stress is making their decisions worse.
The business is running. The body running it is breaking down.
What this has looked like across my clients
One of the most common patterns I see is leaders coming to me convinced they have a focus or execution problem.
They’re missing deadlines. Second-guessing decisions. Struggling to follow through. They think they need a better system, a tighter strategy, or more discipline.
But when we zoom out, a different picture starts to emerge.
They’re running on inconsistent sleep. Skipping meals or under-fueling. Pushing through high stress without recovery. Living in a near-constant state of urgency.
So we don’t start with strategy.
We start with stabilizing the foundation. Energy. Nervous system. Capacity.
And when that shifts, everything else starts to move.
Clients begin thinking more clearly. Decisions get faster. Follow-through becomes more consistent.
What they thought was a performance issue was actually a capacity issue.
Not a strategy problem. A physiological one.
Three signals your body is sending right now
😥 The Knot. Tightness in your chest, shoulders, or gut before a meeting, a decision, or a conversation you’ve been avoiding. In business terms: your nervous system is flagging a misalignment between what you’re doing and what your body can sustain. The knot is not anxiety. It’s data.
🥵 The Burn. Heat, irritability, a short fuse that shows up at hour six when you used to have ten hours of focus. In business terms: your capacity bank is overdrawn. You’re not impatient because you’re a bad leader. You’re impatient because your system is running on fumes.
😳 The Flinch. The pull-back. The moment you avoid the email, the ask, the bold move. Not because you don’t know what to do, but because your body doesn’t have the bandwidth to handle the outcome. In business terms: your nervous system is protecting you from risk it can’t metabolize right now.
These are not feelings to manage. They are data to read.
The second brain your strategy forgot
200 million neurons. 90% of your serotonin. A nerve that carries signals from gut to brain faster than your conscious mind can process them.
Your gut has been running your leadership this whole time. Every “gut feeling” you’ve had about a hire, a deal, a pivot. That wasn’t mystical. That was your enteric nervous system processing information your prefrontal cortex hadn’t caught up to yet.
When the gut is compromised. Stressed, inflamed, underfed. That signal gets buried. The data is still there. It can’t get through the static.
Your gut knew. It just couldn’t get through the static.
The Gut GPS. Use this now.
📌 Cut and paste this anywhere. Screenshot it. Keep it close.
Step 1: Signal Check Right now, before you read another word: where is your body holding tension? Gut, chest, shoulders, jaw? Name it. That’s your starting location.
Step 2: Data Read What decision, conversation, or commitment is that signal connected to? Don’t analyze it. Name it.
Step 3: Capacity Question Ask: “Do I have the nervous system bandwidth to handle this right now, or am I forcing a decision from depletion?”
Step 4: Route If yes → move forward with the decision. If no → table it. Not forever. Until you’ve made a deposit in your energy bank. Sleep. Food. Movement. Stillness. Then revisit.
This is not avoidance. This is design.
I’m writing about one thing right now: how to build a business that grows when your body is telling you to stop. The gut science. The nervous system signals. The maps I drew during the hardest years of my life. The carnivore nutrition shift that changed my brain. The frameworks that my clients use to rebuild from burnout, autoimmune flares, and chronic depletion.
Not wellness advice. Business architecture that starts with the body.
Because without health, we have no business wealth. Period.
Your body has been keeping score this whole time. The question is whether you start reading the board.
