The map on my desk has a coffee ring on it. One line runs crooked where my hand shook. A word is crossed out where I changed my mind mid-session.
I wouldn’t fix a single one of those things.
That crooked line is the point. Every tool on earth can now generate a clean, perfect, instant version of almost anything. So the marks of a human hand stopped being flaws. They became the signal.
A machine can build you a plan. It can’t draw you.
Any tool can generate a picture of a person now. I’m talking about the real you. Your capacity. What you can actually carry this quarter, and what’s quietly running you into the ground under the surface.
A machine can’t read that. You can, once you slow down enough to look.
We are handing more and more of our thinking to something that never sleeps and never pushes back. And the smoother the answer arrives, the less we check our own read.
You’ve felt it. The loop feels like progress.
A clean answer lands, you nod, and move on. The small effortful act of forming your own read then quietly disappears. That act was the work. The tool may do some remarkable things, however that's exactly the trap.
An MIT Media Lab study in 2025 wired people to EEG while they wrote. The ones leaning on an AI assistant showed the weakest brain connectivity and the lowest sense of ownership over their own words. Some couldn’t quote the sentence they had written minutes before. The researchers gave it a name. Cognitive debt.

It isn’t only students. In 2025, The Lancet published a finding that should stop every high performer cold. Experienced doctors, endoscopists with more than 2,000 procedures each, started using an AI tool to help spot precancerous growths. Three months later working without it, their own detection rate had fallen. From about 28 percent to 22 percent. A six-point drop in the skill of experts, after relying on the machine for one season. The researchers called it deskilling.
Let’s read this again. The experts got worse at the exact thing they were expert in. The tool worked fine. They stopped doing 'the seeing themselves piece’.
The Deskilling Loop.
LOOP. You feed the problem into the tool. A clean answer arrives. You nod and move on. The thinking you were supposed to do never happens.
DEBT. The bill arrives quietly. Your own read gets softer. Your judgment gets slower. You don’t notice until you need it most.
DRIFT. You stop trusting your gut entirely. Because you stopped consulting it. The machine didn’t replace your intuition. You just stopped using it.
That’s the trap. You bring AI in to buy back time, and it quietly bills the one account you can't afford to overdraw. Your capacity to think for yourself.

A hand-drawn map protects it. When you draw your business by hand, your body slows to the speed of the pen. You cannot draw and check out at the same time. The hand keeps you in the room. That’s the whole reason I put a marker in a client’s hand before we ever touch a screen.
And there’s a second thing happening here. Someone is sitting across from you, listening, catching the flicker on your face when you land on the real thing. That’s a human being paying full attention. No dashboard has ever done it, and it’s still the most powerful tool in the room.

Boston Consulting Group surveyed nearly 1,500 workers and found that 14% of AI users experience what they now call “AI brain fry.”
Your brain in a fog. Decisions getting slower. Focus dissolving. Not from overwork. From the cognitive cost of managing AI output itself. Every prompt evaluated. Every answer verified. Every rewrite reviewed. The tool multiplies decisions instead of reducing them.

A client told me last week that no matter how many times he prompted, the tool kept him looping. Same problem. Dozen attempts. Different angles. Same wall. He showed up to his session maxed out from it.

One page, a pen and marker, no screen.
Draw your business as a quick picture. Boxes, arrows, a stick figure, whatever comes. Give it five minutes. Don’t tidy it. Don’t prompt anything.
Then read it back. The part you drew first, without thinking, is your gut talking. Start there.
Human first. The machine can come second.
Your business doesn’t need more automation. It needs more of you in the room.
The machine can build the plan. It still can’t draw you.
