⚡🧠⚡The belief that rewired my brain for depression (and how I reversed it)
How I rewired a toxic family pattern that was killing my business and my body
I discovered that my family trauma wasn't just emotional damage, it was literally reshaping my brain architecture. Here's the neuroscience that changed everything.
🤯 The Belief That Nearly Broke My Brain
For 35 years, I carried this belief: "They never believe me."
It started in childhood. Every story I told, every dream I shared, every boundary I tried to set—met with eye rolls, dismissal, or outright verbal abuse. My sister calling me "a slut with a fake business" wasn't just sibling rivalry—it was systematic verbal abuse. My parents choosing her side, every single time, taught my nervous system that my reality didn't matter.
The pattern was crystal clear: Share your truth → Get attacked → Get abandoned.
But here's what I didn't understand then: This wasn't just emotional damage. It was literally rewiring my brain.
🌀 The Depression Spiral: When Temporary Fixes Fail
This core belief—"they never believe me"—led to an even more devastating secondary belief: "I don't believe in myself."
And that's when depression started creeping in then slowly settled in, making a nice home for itself.
No matter how many times I reframed the language, practiced positive affirmations, or tried mindset shifts, they felt like temporary dopamine hits. I'd get through certain peaks and valleys, but nothing was sustainable. The depression would start another return loop, stronger each time.
I was fighting a neurobiological battle with psychological tools and losing.
🧪 The Hidden Neuroscience Behind Family Trauma
Research shows that chronic stress and depression create measurable changes in brain structure, particularly neuronal atrophy and synaptic loss in the medial prefrontal cortex and hippocampus—the exact regions responsible for executive function, memory, and emotional regulation.
Depression affects approximately 264 million people worldwide, with 800,000 dying by suicide annually. 😔
But here's what most people don't know: Depression correlates with atrophy of neurons in the cortical and limbic brain regions that control mood and emotion.
Every time I tried to prove myself to my family, I was triggering stress-induced neuroplasticity—but the wrong kind. Prolonged stress induces the development of dendritic spines and synaptic connectivity in the amygdala, enhancing rumination of negative emotion and fear-learning mechanisms.
My brain was literally wiring itself for depression. 😬
💭 Why Positive Thinking Was and Isn’t Enough
Depression has been called a disorder of impaired cognitive flexibility and prefrontal inhibition, leading to inflexible negative biases in cognition, such as rigidly held negative beliefs.
This explains why my affirmations felt hollow. I wasn't just dealing with thoughts, I was dealing with hardwired neural pathways that had been strengthened over decades.
Depressed patients present overactivation of the default mode network (DMN), contributing to rumination of negative emotions. The DMN is the brain network active during self-referential thinking—exactly what happens when you're stuck in "they don't believe me" loops.
🔥The Autoimmune Connection
While building my coaching practice, my autoimmune flares spiked every time I had to "prove" my worth. This wasn't coincidence.
Chronic stress disrupts neuroplasticity while antidepressant treatment produces opposing effects and can enhance neuroplasticity. But when you're trapped in proving patterns, you're chronically activating stress responses.
My body was keeping the score through inflammation, autoimmune responses, and nervous system dysregulation.
A client of mine shared this book with me years back, and I began to really dive deeper into my body keeping the score and building stronger boundaries + laser sharp awareness to my environment and the people in it.
“As long as you keep secrets and suppress information, you are fundamentally at war with yourself.” - Bessel Van Der Kolk
“In order to change, people need to become aware of their sensations and the way that their bodies interact with the world around them. Physical self-awareness is the first step in releasing the tyranny of the past.” -Bessel Van Der Kolk
This wasn't my first autoimmune wake-up call. I've written about my autoimmune story here, but this time the connection to family trauma was undeniable.
😌 The Natural Neuroplasticity Path
While I was prescribed antidepressants, my gut was already compromised from autoimmune reactions. Adding more medication felt like putting a bandaid on a brain that needed rewiring, not numbing.
I chose the self-directed neuroplasticity route instead.
Here's why this matters: studies show that both pharmacological AND non-pharmacological approaches can enhance neuroplasticity—but only if you understand the mechanisms.
Research now shows that plasticity continues throughout the lifespan, supporting learning, memory, and recovery from injury or disease.
The key wasn't positive thinking—it was self-directed neuroplasticity.
🧫 The Science of Lasting Change 🧬
When we understand neuroplasticity, we recognize that helping clients to bring about change involves helping them change the very neural circuitry in the brain.
Research has firmly established that the brain is a dynamic organ and can change its design throughout life, responding to experience by reorganizing connections.
But here's the specific timeline: Studies show BDNF levels (a neuroplasticity marker) increased significantly after antidepressant treatment, with optimum results when post-treatment BDNF levels are assessed 4–8 weeks after treatment onset.
🔄 My Rewiring Protocol
Instead of trying to convince my family of my worth, I implemented a neuroplasticity-based approach:
🔴 Week 1-2: Pattern Interruption
Morning ritual: Wrote my new belief 10x daily: "I trust my voice and attract those ready to hear it"
Visual reinforcement: Added it to my 'Reel In Your Power' Map and colored it daily (engages both verbal and visual cortex)
Micro-moments: Set phone reminders to repeat the belief during family interactions
Science: Neurons that fire together, wire together! Repetition creates myelin sheath strengthening around new neural pathways
🟢 Week 3-4: Environmental Redesign
Audit exercise: Listed all relationships—who drains vs. energizes me?
Intentional exposure: Scheduled 3 coffee dates with my biggest supporter, also a trauma-informed coach (my mentor Pauline)
Digital boundaries: Unfollowed family social media to reduce negative input
Energy tracking: Journaled nervous system responses before/after each interaction
Science: Environmental enrichment accelerates neuroplasticity—your brain literally grows faster in supportive spaces
🔵 Week 5-8: Boundary Implementation
Script creation: Prepared 3 responses for family criticism: "I hear you have concerns. I'm confident in my path"
Physical boundaries: I paused communication until my nervous system felt safe then I limited family calls to 10 minutes, on Sundays only
Business protection: Stopped sharing wins/struggles with family entirely
Success metrics: Tracked autoimmune flare frequency (dropped 70%)
Science: Chronic stress inhibits BDNF production—boundaries allow your brain's growth factor to recover
📊 The Measurable Results
Within 60 days:
Client quality transformation: I started attracting people who already valued what I offered (no more desperate-selling)
Autoimmune improvement: Inflammation markers dropped as I stopped fighting upstream battles
Revenue stabilization: My income became predictable instead of feast-or-famine
Family irrelevance: Their opinions couldn't destabilize my nervous system anymore
🔬 The Coaching Science
As a PCC-level coach, I now understand why traditional coaching often fails: we're treating neurobiological patterns with purely psychological interventions.
Health and wellness coaches who work with an understanding of neuroplasticity are more likely to engage those regions of the client's brain that are important for motivation and learning.
Increasingly, antidepressant effects on neuroplasticity are shown to correlate with behavioral improvement, both in humans and in animal models.
✨ The Reframe That Changes Everything
**💭 Coaching Questions**
Take a moment to reflect:
🔍 What family pattern still triggers your nervous system in business situations?
⚡ Which client interactions make your shoulders automatically tense up?
🎭 When do you find yourself "proving" instead of simply being?
❌ My old belief: "They never believe me" (neuroplasticity working against you)
🏅 My new belief: "I trust my voice and attract those ready to hear it" (neuroplasticity working for you)
This isn't about controlling others' responses. It's about choosing where you invest your neural energy.
🎯 Your Neuroplasticity Action Plan
🟠 Days 1-14: Neural Foundation
Belief selection: Choose your new belief statement—test it by saying it aloud (does it make your shoulders drop and breathing deepen?)
Morning ritual: Write it 10x daily, preferably by hand (engages motor cortex for stronger encoding)
Micro-dosing: Set 3 phone reminders to repeat your belief during stressful moments
Body awareness: Notice physical sensations when old belief surfaces vs. new one
Science: Daily repetition creates measurable myelin thickening around new neural pathways within 2 weeks
🟢 Days 15-30: Environmental Optimization
Relationship audit: List your top 10 interactions—who energizes vs. drains you?
Supportive exposure: Schedule 2-3 weekly touchpoints with your biggest believers
Toxic boundaries: Limit energy vampires to specific timeframes (Sunday calls only, 20-minute max)
Digital detox: Unfollow/mute accounts that trigger your old belief patterns
Energy tracking: Rate your nervous system (1-10) before/after each interaction
Science: Environmental enrichment increases BDNF production by 200%—your brain literally grows faster in supportive spaces
🔵 Days 31-60: Integration & Measurement
Somatic tracking: Monitor autoimmune flares, sleep quality, and afternoon energy crashes
Business metrics: Notice client attraction quality, pricing confidence, and sales conversations
Relationship shifts: Track who shows up differently when you stop proving your worth
Success evidence: Screenshot testimonials, wins, and positive feedback to counter old programming
Milestone check: At day 45, reassess your original belief—does it feel foreign now?
Science: Neuroplasticity markers show measurable change at 4-8 weeks, with peak integration at 6-10 weeks
✨ The Deeper Truth
You're not here to convince anyone of your worth. You're here to find the people who already recognize it and serve them with everything you've got.
When you stop performing for the wrong audience, you become magnetic to the right one—because your nervous system is finally wired for success instead of survival.
This is the difference between entrepreneurs who burn out and those who build empires: One group exhausts themselves trying to convert skeptics. The other attracts ready buyers by radiating unshakeable self-trust.
Your family's opinion becomes irrelevant when your bank account reflects your true value.
💡 The Bottom Line
Corrective neuroplasticity can mediate remission, with or without medication. But only if you understand that lasting change happens at the neural level, not just the mindset level.
Your beliefs aren't just thoughts—they're neural superhighways that determine whether you attract dream clients or energy vampires, whether you charge premium rates or discount your worth, whether you sleep peacefully or lie awake rehearsing imaginary arguments.
Is it time to build better roads?
